Special Event Informational Package & Application

The Stafford County Sheriff's Office internship program is designed to provide qualified college students the opportunity to observe and understand the organization and operations of a local contemporary law enforcement agency.  Students will have the opportunity to have firsthand experience in the various operational and administrative functions of the Sheriff's Office.

The typical intern experience involves working in the Professional Standards Division assisting with research projects that support the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office mission.  While assigned to the Division, the intern is rotated through the various divisions of the Sheriff’s office for the purpose of observing, understanding and experiencing the functions of the Sheriff’s Office and its roles and responsibilities.

The internship program is typically scheduled June through August each year and is six weeks in length (approximately 144 hours-3 days a week/average 8 hours a day/for 6 weeks). The program length is flexible and may be adjusted based on the specific college/university internship requirements.

Interns must be enrolled in a college or university, and provide appropriate information and support material from the college or university if the student plans to apply for academic credit. Applicants who are residents of Stafford County will receive additional consideration during the selection process. The intern must also accept the terms, conditions and schedules created by the Sheriff's Office during the assigned internship period. Intern positions are volunteer (non-paid) positions.

A prospective intern is required to complete an internship application, submit University/College course credit requirements (if applicable), participate in an interview and submit to a criminal history and driving record review.  The number of interns selected each year is limited.  Appointment is at the discretion of the Sheriff.

Applications for the internship program should be submitted by February 15th of each year.   Contact 540-658-4470 or SheriffHR@staffordcountyva.gov to apply.
