The well-known jury duty scam is on the rise with the scammer impersonating a well-known deputy.
On July 21st at approximately 7:05 p.m. Deputy W.J. Newton responded to a residence for a scam. The victim received a call from someone posing as the Chief Deputy himself, Shawn Kimmitz. The major miscreant informed the victim he had missed jury duty and needed to pay exactly $9,750 to avoid being arrested.
While the suspect spoofed his number to look like the Sheriff’s Office’s non-emergency number, the victim sensed something was off. The suspect would demand the victim provide the money in cash at a “bond office,” however, the address he provided was a gas station on Warrenton Road. The victim did not comply and instead contacted the real Sheriff’s Office to ensure he was not wanted.
As a reminder, no one within the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office will demand money over the phone. If you receive a call like this, know it is a scam and do not comply. |
