Despite flying cars being something of fiction, one Stafford driver made it a reality after consuming too much alcohol.

On June 12th at approximately 4:13 p.m. deputies responded to Southbound Richmond Highway in the area of Bells Hill Road for an auto accident. The caller advised a Chrysler “violently” left the roadway before going airborne. The caller further advised shortly after the failed mission to Mars, the driver took off on foot.

Sergeant E.E. West was first on scene and quickly discovered the vehicle went to infinity and beyond after striking a sewer cover at a high speed. Considering the driver left behind his vehicle, Sergeant West had no problem identifying the registered owner’s address. First Sergeant D.W. Fetterolf would respond a few streets away to the registered owner’s residence in case the driver showed up. Moments later, the driver emerged from the woods wearing the same clothes of the suspect driver. As soon as First Sergeant Fetterolf attempted to make contact with the suspect, he would throw both hands up and surrender.

Unprompted, the suspect admitted to crashing the vehicle. Deputy S.M. Kotter would handle the DUI investigation after several signs of intoxication were observed. Within the vehicle, a crushed can of Heineken was located.

The driver was charged with driving under the influence, drinking while driving, hit and run, reckless driving, and second offense refusal. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $2,500 secured bond.
