A Camaro driver attempted to get out of an arrest by blaming his pursuit on his vehicle.

On June 6th at approximately 5:45 p.m. Deputy S.C. Martin was traveling Northbound on Richmond Highway near South Campus Boulevard. As he did, he observed a gray Camaro traveling 86 MPH in a 45 MPH zone. Deputy Martin would make a U-turn and attempt to conduct a traffic stop. Instead, the Camaro would continue heading Southbound.

As the Camaro began climbing the hill towards American Legion Road it would cross the double yellow line to get past the dreaded Stafford traffic. After traveling Southbound in the Northbound lanes, the Camaro would return to the right side of the road just to make a right turn onto American Legion Road. Confident he lost Deputy Martin, the driver continued cruising down American Legion Road.

His victory was short lived for vehicles do not escape Deputy Martin. Deputy Martin was able to catch up to the Camaro. Realizing there was no escape, the driver pulled into the American Legion parking lot. He was detained without further incident. The 19-year-old driver admitted to seeing Deputy Martin; however, he was “going too fast to slow down.”

The driver’s need for speed would earn him felony eluding and reckless driving charges. He was released by the magistrate on personal recognizance.
