If a picture is worth a thousand words, how much is video evidence worth? One Stafford man found out just how much it would cost him after attempting to “borrow” money from a Stafford business.

On April 2nd at approximately 9:12 p.m. Deputy J.D. Hurt responded to Advance Auto Service, located at 26 Dorothy Lane, for a call of an unknown problem. There was an open line and what sounded to be a struggle on the other end. Deputy Hurt arrived on scene and observed a man holding another to the ground. The man on top, a business employee, advised he was just robbed by the man in his custody, Grady Kiker, 49. Kiker would advise he only came to the business to “borrow” cash.

After separating both parties, Deputy Hurt reviewed security cameras in order to determine what truly transpired. Cameras showed Kiker created his own parking spot in the middle of Dorothy Lane before walking towards the business. The employee was in the back of the business, minding his own business, when Kiker stealthily entered. Kiker opened the register and started filling his pockets with cash. After realizing this, the employee blocked the door and attempted to call police. Kiker threw the employee out of the way in order to attempt a great escape. The employee pursued the recent robber and detained him until Deputy Hurt arrived.

Still within Kiker’s pocket, Deputy Hurt located the stolen money. Kiker advised he had that prior to the incident. His answer changed after Deputy Hurt informed him of the camera footage. Kiker also advised he had “a bit” to drink; however, denied driving. His answer once again changed after Deputy Hurt informed him of the camera footage.

Kiker was quickly informed the difference between borrowing and robbing. He was charged with robbery, driving under the influence second offense in ten years, as well as, stopping on a highway. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
