Sgt. B.U. Demirci and K-9 Titan are having quite the week, as K-9 Titan was instrumental in locating a suspect from a pursuit last night.

On January 31st at 9:51 p.m. Deputy R.S. Dominguez observed a Mitsubishi Galant failing to maintain the lane of travel on Warrenton Road as it approached Cambridge Street. A traffic stop was conducted in the area of 30 Butler Road.

The driver did not have his license with him, but was identified as Juaquim Lunn, 35, of Baltimore, Maryland. While speaking with Lunn, Deputy Dominguez observed a suspected controlled substance on the center console of the vehicle and radioed for back-up.

Deputy F.C. O’Neill arrived and the deputies instructed Lunn to exit the vehicle. Not realizing K-9 Titan was on duty, Lunn put the car in drive and sped away. The deputies returned to their patrol cars and called in the pursuit. Lunn proceeded to pass several cars on the double yellow and ran a red light at the intersection of White Oak Road and Cool Springs Road. Lunn sped up to 88 mph before turning onto Phillips Street, which ends in a cul-de-sac.

Once Lunn reached the cul-de-sac, he fled on foot, falling into a creek, but continuing up a hill and out of sight. Sgt. Demirci and K-9 Titan arrived on scene and immediately went to work. On his 15’ tracking lead, K-9 Titan quickly found the suspect’s trail and located the suspect. Sgt. Demirci could see Lunn approximately 30 yards ahead and gave commands to surrender. In his smartest move of the day, Lunn obeyed the commands and was taken into custody without incident.

The suspected controlled substances were seized and Lunn was charged with possession of controlled substance, eluding and traffic related offenses. He was held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
