The victim in the shooting which occurred on January 17 at 1130 International Parkway succumbed to his injuries on January 19. The victim is identified as Ely Grimes, 47, of Fredericksburg. An upgraded charge of murder is pending for the suspect, George Batts, 38, of Richlands, North Carolina. The investigation is ongoing.

Previously Released- January 18:
Detectives continue to investigate the shooting yesterday at 1130 International Parkway. We are still very early in the investigation, but want to provide an update.

Detectives have learned that both the suspect and victim were attending an event for the Tuckahoe Motorcycle Club, which has a clubhouse in the business park. At approximately 10:15 a.m. the Stafford County Emergency Communications Center received a call for shots fired in the parking lot of the business park. The call was quickly updated to indicate one subject had been shot in the chest.

Deputies arrived on scene to find a male victim in his forties suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. The suspect was still in the parking lot brandishing a handgun. The suspect refused repeated commands to drop the weapon, pointed the weapon toward deputies and was subsequently shot by deputies on the scene.

Deputies immediately provided first aid to both the victim and suspect. Deputies have trauma kits in their patrol cars with supplies to treat gunshot wounds. These kits and the quick actions of the deputies on scene were instrumental in keeping both the suspect and victim alive. Stafford County Fire and Rescue transported both patients to the hospital.

The suspect has been identified as George Ronald Batts, Jr., age 38, of Richlands, North Carolina. Charges of malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony are pending.

The deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, as is policy on these types of incidents.

This morning at 10:15 a.m. deputies responded to a call for shots fired at 1130 International Parkway. The call was soon upgraded to a person shot. Deputies arrived to find a white male in his forties with a gunshot wound. A suspect was located nearby brandishing a handgun. The suspect was shot by deputies. The suspect is described as a white male in his forties or fifties. Both the suspect and victim have been transported to the hospital with critical injuries. No deputies are injured. This is an active investigation and more information will be provided as detectives process the scene. Please avoid the area as there is a large police presence.
