We would like to make the community aware that hackers are leveraging the public’s concern about COVID-19 to steal victims’ information. In one scam, hackers are spreading malware through fake maps tracking the coronavirus.

Just as doctors recommend frequent hand washing as the best defense against the coronavirus, cybersecurity professionals are urging computer users to be more wary of what they click on. Remember, malicious actors often attempt to spread malware by disguising it as information from credible sources. So, don’t click on links or download anything from an unknown source.

Please visit this link for additional tips for staying safe online: https://www.us-cert.gov/ncas/tips?mod=article_inline. Also, remember that the Virginia Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are the official sources of information regarding the coronavirus.

In addition, we are continuing to receive reports from residents contacted by scammers posing as representatives of Dominion Power. The scammers typically advise residents that their accounts are overdue and they must make payment immediately in the form of gift cards or their power will be turned off. Please remember that no reputable business, organization, or government agency will demand payment in the form of gift cards. To report a scam, please contact the Sheriff’s Office at (540) 658-4400.
