By Major D.R. Lenhart
August 28, 2017

On August 26, 2017 at approximately 0346 hours, Stafford Deputies responded to a larceny that had just occurred at the 7-Eleven Store located at 2143 Jefferson Davis Highway. The clerk advised that two males had just run out of the store carrying red baskets full of stolen merchandise and left in a silver SUV, headed northbound on Route 1. Sergeant Greg Haney was in the area and observed a vehicle matching the description provided by the caller. He activated his emergency equipment in an attempt to perform a traffic stop. The vehicle accelerated and entered onto northbound Interstate 95. Dispatch advised the Virginia State Police of the pursuit.

Sergeant Haney pursued the vehicle from the 143 mile marker to the area of the 152 mile marker. Due to the increase in traffic volume, he backed off and deactivated his emergency equipment. Minutes later he was notified that VSP had spotted the vehicle at the 160 mile marker and was now in pursuit of it. The vehicle subsequently crashed off exit 169, where it went through numerous trees and a fence, coming to rest in the Barnes and Noble parking lot. When the pursuing Trooper got to the wrecked vehicle, there was only one occupant inside who was sitting in the driver’s seat. Fairfax County Police responded along with their helicopter and two K-9 units but were not able to locate any further suspects.

The pursued vehicle had been reported stolen out of Prince William County. The items stolen from the
7-Eleven were still inside. The driver was identified at the time by his New Jersey license as Dakwon Burgess. After arrested and fingerprinted on charges obtained by VSP, his true identity was found to be Carlton Morris Paige Jr., nineteen, of Sabillasville MD.

Stafford County charged Mr. Paige with Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Speed to Elude, Shoplifting, Reckless Driving and numerous other traffic offenses. Virginia State Police arrested him on numerous charges in Fairfax County.
