The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in locating a suspect who injured a deputy in a crash Thursday morning.

On February 15th at 1:34 a.m. Sergeant J.T. Forman witnessed a Scion disregard a red traffic signal at the intersection of Butler Road and Chatham Heights Road. Sgt. Forman attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect refused to yield and initiated a pursuit.

Speeds reached approximately 60 mph as the suspect continued on Chatham Heights Road toward Kings Highway. The suspect turned on his left turn signal, but turned right onto Hamilton Street. The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office wasn’t fooled and the pursuit continued onto Hamilton Street, though a stop sign onto Rodney Lane. The suspect continued behind the businesses of Chatham Shopping Center, oblivious to the speed bumps.

As the chase reached the rear of Laundry Basket laundromat, it appeared the suspect would throw in the towel. Instead, he turned around and crashed head-on into one of the marked patrol cars causing minor injuries to a deputy.

The suspect driver fled on foot and was able to evade an all night manhunt. The driver has been identified as Elijah Lucas, 24, of Stafford. Active warrants are on file for eluding, felony hit and run, felony assault on law enforcement, driving suspended, expired registration, expired inspection and failure to obey a traffic light.

Lucas is described as a black male, 5’8” tall and 155 pounds. A photo of Lucas from November of last year is attached to this release. Anyone with information on Lucas’ location is asked to call the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office at 540-658-4400.
