Karate Kid DUI

Mr. Miyagi taught us many things in the 1984 movie classic “The Karate Kid,” but driving drunk was not one of them. A 43-year-old Stafford man was offered field sobriety tests much easier than sanding the floor and painting the fence, but was subsequently arrested.

On February 9th at approximately 8:50 p.m. First Sergeant A.I. Assur was numerous miles away from the Cobra Kai Dojo as he traveled on Richmond Highway. While there, our communication officers informed him of a drunk driver complaint in the area. The caller advised a vehicle was swerving all over the road. While a Be on the Lookout can often be hard to spot, a man who catches a fly with chopsticks can accomplish anything. First Sergeant Assur located the vehicle with a fresh wax on, wax off coat at the Warrenton Road intersection.

Karate lies in the mind and heart, not in the hands. That must have been because deputies watched as the driver was more interested in playing with the phone in his hands than realizing the traffic light was green. Deputies conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and made contact with the driver. The driver had clear signs of intoxication and admitted to consuming “one beer over there.” Despite his one beer claim, there was more than just one open container of alcohol in the vehicle. In an attempt to prove his sobriety, the driver without being prompted, imitated the classic Ralph Macchio stance to try and conduct a crane kick. Unlike Daniel-san, this would not end in a victory.

The driver’s karate lessons involving sweeping the leg and having no mercy would need to wait. He was charged with driving under the influence, drinking while driving, and refusal. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail until sober.
