At approximately 7:22 a.m. Deputy D.J. Taylor was conducting his SRO duties at Brooke Point High School, located at 1700 Courthouse Road, when he was informed of a large fight taking place in the cafeteria. Due to the number of students involved, additional deputies were requested to help with crowd control. While deputies, along with school staff, were able to separate all parties involved, this would spark numerous disturbances throughout the school, including social media threats, and another fight where staff members were assaulted. Due to the ongoing tensions among students, a decision was made by deputies and staff to place the school on a lockdown for the remainder of the day out of abundance of caution. There were no serious injuries reported during the disturbances.

As a result of yesterday’s disturbances, six students received criminal complaints for assault and battery by mob, two received criminal complaints for assault and battery, one received a criminal complaint for obstruction of justice, and one received a criminal complaint for use of a person’s identity with intent to intimidate. An 18-year-old student was charged with assault and battery by mob and was released by the magistrate on personal recognizance. Additional criminal complaints may be filed at a later date. The school is handling discipline for all students involved. Additional deputies are currently at the school to continue their investigations, and to ensure the safety and security of students and staff.

When it comes to incidents like these, we ask for the community’s patience in order to provide the facts in a reasonable manner. There were several rumors of weapons being involved and serious injuries that deputies thoroughly investigated and determined them to be false. Spreading rumors only escalates tensions and makes it difficult for deputies to investigate the matter at hand.
