A 26-year-old Fredericksburg woman received felony charges after a traffic stop uncovered children within arm’s length of suspected dangerous drugs.

On January 18th at approximately 1:04 p.m. Deputy F.A. Martinez conducted a routine traffic stop on a vehicle at Walmart, located at 11 Village Parkway. The registered owner, and current driver, Makayla Coffman, had a suspended license. Deputy Martinez made contact with Coffman, who had three children all under the age of seven within the vehicle.

During their conversation, Deputy Martinez informed Coffman his K-9 partner, Mija, was trained in detecting narcotics. When asked if Mija would detect anything out of the ordinary, Coffman advised there was “cocaine” not only on her person, but within the vehicle. She was then detained as Deputy J.J. Holetzky responded to assist in the search of the vehicle.

During the search, multiple suspected controlled substances and paraphernalia were located all throughout the vehicle. Some were located within a pile of children’s clothing, some were located within arm’s reach of the children. Coffman was charged with possession of controlled substances, driving while suspended, and three counts of felony child neglect. The children were transferred to a responsible party as Coffman was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $1,500 secured bond.
