July 6, 2016

The Stafford Sheriff’s Office received a Breaking and Entering call from a homeowner on Short Branch Road on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at approximately 8:00 a.m. He explained that as he entered his garage from the kitchen area of his home, he discovered a man inside, holding his $2000 bicycle. The homeowner shouted to a family member to retrieve his gun and call law enforcement. The homeowner held the suspect at gunpoint for a few moments, but when approaching cruiser sirens were heard, the suspect ran from the scene.

Several patrol units, detectives and a K-9 unit responded to the scene and a perimeter was quickly established that included the neighborhood and the adjoining shopping center. A reverse 9-1-1 call notifying citizens to be on the lookout for a person matching the suspect’s description was dispatched to approximately 1500 residents within a one mile radius. At approximately 9:05 a.m. an alert citizen who had received the reverse 9-1-1 call observed a subject matching the suspect’s description hiding near the noise barrier wall along Interstate 95. A K-9 Unit was deployed and the dog began to track the suspect. The suspect was found and taken into custody by Deputies A. Smith, his K-9 Lobo and Sgt. W. Johnson without further incident.

Marcel Brannum, age 27, of Washington D.C. was arrested and charged with Grand Larceny. He was taken to the Rappahannock Regional Jail and incarcerated with no bond.
