“A Bad Night” Pursuit

A 23-year-old Woodbridge man’s bad night got worse when he learned he couldn’t flee from Stafford deputies.

On August 1st at approximately 2:10 a.m. Sergeant A.T. Leckemby headed to Buffalo Mo’s, located at 33 Wicomico Drive, for a drunk driver complaint. It was advised a male was taking shot after shot while stating he was having “a bad night.” The caller further advised the intoxicated male got behind the wheel of a sedan and drove into some bushes.

When Sergeant Leckemby entered the parking lot he noticed a Honda Civic without headlights. While the headlights weren’t visible, the front-end damage was. As Sergeant Leckemby drew closer, the driver quickly hopped in and accelerated out onto Greenspring Drive, initiating a pursuit. As the cracked Civic turned onto Salisbury Drive, it nearly struck another vehicle. To avoid it, the intoxicated driver swerved up onto the sidewalk and into a tree. While most pursuits would end here, this driver wanted to prolong the inevitable.

Sergeant Leckemby would give commands to the driver that were unfortunately ignored. The Honda, only now turning on its headlights, would then begin to reverse and went across Garrisonville Road. In the process the driver ran a red light. The Honda continued into Stafford Market Place where, once again, the driver would crash. Turns out it’s hard to flee while drunk. Again, Sergeant Leckemby gave commands to the driver who took the hint and surrendered.

Deputy K.F. Bierfeldt responded and conducted a DUI investigation. The driver, German Alfaro, had signs of intoxication and admitted to consuming both “two or three” beers along with “one or two” shots of tequila. He further advised his friends told him not to drive; however, he did not listen.

Alfaro was charged with felony eluding, driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content between .15 and .2, two counts of failure to maintain control of a vehicle, two counts of hit and run, failure to obey a red light, as well as, driving without headlights. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $10,000 secured bond.

If your friends tell you not to drive, please listen to them and find a sober ride instead.
