Two males in their 40’s attempted to use the home base philosophy to escape a traffic stop, only adding to their list of charges.
On June 21st at approximately 4:00 p.m. Deputy X.D. Bates was patrolling the area of Salisbury Drive. While doing so he observed a F-150 occupied by two males. What caught Deputy Bates attention to this truck was the fact the driver was making sudden rapid movements after noticing Deputy Bates. Deputy Bates would engage the driver in a brief conversation. This conversation was brief due to the driver quickly driving off.
Deputy Bates would follow the truck onto Greenspring Road and then onto Whitsons Run Drive. While in the residential area, the driver traveled at speeds nearly double the posted speed limit. The truck would stop at a residence and both occupants quickly got out. Despite commands to stay with the vehicle, both occupants fled into the residence. Unfortunately for them, the age-old home base rule doesn’t apply in Stafford County.
Deputy Bates, now accompanied with additional deputies, attempted to have both suspects exit the residence. After some hesitation, both eventually did, but were now wearing different clothing. This attempt to throw deputies off their rhythm didn’t work considering Deputy Bates got a good look at both occupants prior to their clothes switching.
The driver was identified as Juan Gutierrez Martinez, 40, of Stafford, and the passenger was identified as Eduard Sanchez Gonzales, 42, of Stafford. Within the F-150 deputies located a completely demolished box of Corona beers. While both were discovered to be drinking, Martinez did not meet the legal limit to be considered intoxicated.
Martinez was charged with drinking while driving, speeding, eluding police, and obstruction of justice. Gonzales was charged with eluding police, and obstruction of justice. Both were held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. |
