Another DUI driver was stopped while traveling through Stafford last night.
On June 10th at approximately 10:47 p.m. Deputy D.S. Jett was at the intersection of Warrenton Road and Cambridge Street. While stopped at the red light in his clearly marked cruiser, a Kia ran the red light. Due to the obvious traffic offense, Deputy Jett conducted a traffic stop. Prior to the Kia stopping, Deputy Jett observed the vehicle cross over the centerline.
Deputy Jett made contact with the 51-year-old driver and was quickly hit with the overwhelming strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. After noticing several other signs of intoxication, Deputy Jett inquired how much alcohol the driver had consumed. At first, the driver admitted to consuming two beers; however, a moment later, doubled that number. After field sobriety tests, the driver was detained. During an inventory search of the vehicle, a nearly consumed can of beer was located in the driver’s door cup holder.
The driver was charged with driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content between .15 and .2, drinking while driving, and failure to obey a traffic light. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $1,500 secured bond.
