It is a well-known fact drinking and driving is a recipe for disaster, but attempting to flee on foot after the fact will earn you nothing but extra charges. One 38-year-old Madison man discovered this fact Sunday night.

On November 26th at approximately 7:14 p.m. Deputy A.M. Pitts responded to the area of Kings Highway and Ferry Road for a drunk driver complaint. The caller advised a pickup truck was having a rather hard time staying in its lane. Deputy Pitts located the vehicle as it traveled on Cool Springs Road, and she too noticed it failing to maintain the lane of travel.

Deputy Pitts activated her emergency equipment prior to the vehicle crossing the Chatham Bridge and into Fredericksburg. When she made contact with both occupants within the vehicle, she discovered they both were intoxicated. The driver provided a false identity as well. While dealing with the intoxicated driver, the passenger made the unwise choice to flee on foot away from the traffic stop. Despite Deputy Pitts’ warning of what would happen if he too ran, the driver followed in the passenger’s footsteps and fled on foot.

Deputy R.L. Hubbard, with the assistance of the Fredericksburg Police Department, located both suspects attempting to hide behind a nearby business. Their failed fleeing attempt ended with a trip to Rappahannock Regional Jail.

The driver was charged with driving under the influence, providing a false identity to law enforcement, obstruction of justice with force, eluding, and driving without a license. The passenger was charged with obstruction of justice. Both were held without bond.
