A Spotsylvania man’s violent assault on a former partner was ended by a good Samaritan Friday night in South Stafford.

On July 7th at approximately 11:32 p.m. Deputy S.A. Hensley and Deputy D.S. Jett responded to the Quarles Mobile Home Park for a report of an assault. It was advised the assailant was currently being held down by a citizen. When deputies arrived, they located the suspect still being held down and he was detained as they investigated what occurred.

It was discovered, the victim was at her residence with the good Samaritan when the suspect, Mark Spriggs, 49, suddenly entered. Without warning, he began strangling the victim. The good Samaritan attempted to separate them as the suspect continued the assault. Eventually, the good Samaritan was able to force Spriggs out of the residence and pin him to the ground to await deputy’s assistance. During the struggle, Spriggs had bitten the good Samaritan.

Due to the fact he admitted to driving to the residence, his vehicle was still running outside the residence, and he had the heavy odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath, Deputy Jett conducted field sobriety tests. A search of his person and vehicle were conducted and suspected controlled substances were located.

Spriggs was charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit a felony, strangulation, two counts of assault and battery, possession of controlled substances, possession of paraphernalia, driving under the influence, two counts of refusal, and obstruction of justice. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond while both the victim and good Samaritan denied medical attention. Deputy Hensley did provided information about Empowerhouse to the victim.

Great work to not only Deputy Hensley and Deputy Jett, but to the good Samaritan who stepped up in order to prevent the situation from escalating.
