A Stafford resident was charged with several serious offenses last night after attempting to elude a deputy for a speeding offense on Garrisonville Road.

On February 25th at 7:09 p.m. Deputy J.W. Ahern was patrolling eastbound along Garrrisonville Road when he observed a blue Toyota minivan traveling westbound at 64 mph in the posted 45 mph zone near Vulcan Quarry Road. As the minivan passed the deputy, the driver turned off his lights and accelerated away into the darkness.

Deputy Ahern activated his emergency equipment and the suspect continued at a high rate of speed westbound. The suspect made a right onto Ripley Road entering the subdivision of Apple Grove. The suspect continued without his lights at a high rate of speed into the residential area and made a left on Kinser Way, a right on Bannon Lane, a right on Hayes Street and a right back onto Ripley Road.

The pursuit continued back to westbound Garrisonville Road, to a left onto Joshua Road. At this point, the driver evidently came to his senses and stopped at the intersection of Joshua Road and St. Robert’s Drive. Deputy Ahern was joined by Deputy B.E. Vaughn for a high risk stop.

The driver was identified as Grant Egan, 18, and there were four juvenile passengers in the minivan. Egan was charged with felony eluding, reckless driving, underage possession of alcohol and four counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He was held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail. The juveniles were released to their parents.

When you see the flashing blue lights, slow down and pull over. Do not turn a traffic infraction into a felony arrest.
