Grate Expectations

It is a pipe dream to think you can escape justice in Stafford County. A Stafford man may have had grate expectations when he disposed of evidence in a storm drain, but creative Sheriff’s Office employees were able to retrieve the contraband.

On January 29th at 10:59 a.m. Sergeant A.I. Assur observed a Chevy Equinox without a state inspection sticker near Center Street and Garrisonville Road. The Chevy proceeded through a red traffic signal and Sgt. Assur activated his emergency equipment to conduct a traffic stop.

The driver of the Chevy pulled into a parking lot on Travis Lane and exited the vehicle, dropping an item into the storm drain beside the vehicle. The driver was identified and ultimately charged with driving suspended, disregarding a traffic signal and obstruction of justice.

After releasing the driver on summonses, Sgt. Assur focused his attention on retrieving the dropped item from the storm drain. Unfortunately, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were unavailable, so with the help of a pool net and Stafford County Fire and Rescue, the item was retrieved from the approximate 10 foot hole. The item will be sent to the lab for testing and may result in additional charges.

We are “grateful” for Sgt. Assur’s work to keep Stafford County safe.
