A bicyclist’s attempt to avoid arrest was short-lived, as he was captured after a brief, slow-speed pursuit last night.

On November 10th at 7:16 p.m. Deputy J.W. Ahern observed a wanted subject riding a bicycle on westbound Garrisonville Road near Dunn Drive. Deputy Ahern recognized the bicyclist as Leroy Johnson II, 39, of Stafford and knew he was wanted for petit larceny and destruction of property. Deputy Ahern informed Johnson of the active warrants and told him he was under arrest. Instead of giving up, Johnson skedaddled on his bike toward Onville Road.

In one of the slowest pursuits we have seen, Johnson went up the hill at approximately 5 mph with Deputy Ahern trailing him in the marked patrol car. Johnson turned onto Onville Road and stopped just past the 7-Eleven. Again, Deputy Ahern informed Johnson he was under arrest for the active warrants.

This time Johnson elected to attempt to flee on foot, leaving the bicycle behind. He may have been tired from the uphill bike ride, as he was quickly detained and handcuffed.

Johnson was charged with two counts of obstruction and served the active warrants. He was held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $1,000 bond.
