A Norfolk woman was arrested for DUI after an incident along Warrenton Road Saturday night.

On October 22nd at 9:11 p.m. First Sergeant B.W. Collins observed several people standing around a Nissan Maxima at the intersection of Warrenton Road and Village Parkway. He initially believed there was an accident, when suddenly the Nissan accelerated through the red light onto Village Parkway.

First Sergeant Collins activated his emergency equipment to stop the Nissan, but the driver continued on Village Parkway at approximately 70-80 mph. The driver made a hard turn into the University of Mary Washington campus and stopped where the main parking lot branches off. Deputies instructed the driver to turn the car off, but she said she couldn’t. The car was then shifted into neutral and began rolling toward the patrol car. Finally, the parking brake was applied and the occupants were ordered out.

The driver was identified as Tia Barnes, 32. Deputies learned she had left a wedding and there was a disturbance with another driver at the traffic signal. The wedding story was corroborated, as Barnes’ passenger had been holding the top tier of the wedding cake during the brief pursuit. Due to her driving, the cake was thrown all over the passenger and interior of the car.

Deputies were unable to locate the other parties involved in the disturbance at the traffic signal. Barnes was arrested for DUI, eluding and the traffic signal violation. She was held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail until sober.
