A Spotsylvania man was sentenced to 10 days in jail after a deputy stopped him for using a cell phone while driving.

On October 16th of last year, Deputy J.C. Curtis stopped a vehicle on Butler Road after witnessing the driver using a cell phone while driving. The driver was identified as Berganza Salazar, 37, and explained he was talking to his mother on the phone. Upon checking Salazar’s license status, Deputy Curtis discovered Salazar was revoked for DUI.

Salazar was charged with driving after forfeiture of license and the cell phone violation. He finally had his day in court this week and pled guilty to the driving after forfeiture of license and the cell phone charge was nolle prosequi.

Salazar was given 180 days in jail with 170 suspended. He is still facing an August court date in Spotsylvania for DUI and driving revoked that occurred in March of this year in that jurisdiction.

Put your phone down while driving or face a ticket.
