A suspect is in custody on numerous charges after attempting to elude deputies.

On August 1 at 5:58 p.m., Sergeant J.J. Kreider responded to the 7-Eleven at 552 White Oak Road for a report of possible drug activity. The caller advised the suspect was a white male in a white Honda sedan. Upon arrival, Sergeant Kreider observed the vehicle parked on the side of the business.

He approached the vehicle and began speaking with the driver, William Spindle, 48, of Stafford. As Sergeant Kreider spoke with Spindle, he observed Spindle attempting to conceal drug paraphernalia underneath a frying pan and a grocery bag. Sergeant Kreider instructed Spindle to turn the car off and place the keys on the dashboard. He complied and became agitated with the deputy. Spindle then grabbed the keys and started the car despite being informed that he was under arrest.

In an unsuccessful attempt to flee, Spindle put the car in drive and the car lurched forward nearly colliding into the building. Sergeant Kreider opened the driver’s side door and Spindle climbed out of the driver’s seat and fled through the passenger side door. A foot pursuit ensued in the wooded area behind the business. Sergeant Kreider was able to catch-up to Spindle and a brief struggle ensued before he was successfully taken into custody.

During a search of the vehicle, additional drug paraphernalia was located. A bag dropped by Spindle also was found to contain controlled substances. Spindle was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of controlled paraphernalia, two counts of obstruction of justice, eluding, and reckless driving. He was held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
