Another repeat DUI offender was arrested Saturday evening in Stafford County after a brief pursuit.

On March 27 at 7:28 p.m., Deputy C.T. Richardson attempted to stop a speeding vehicle near Jefferson Davis Highway and Hospital Center Boulevard. The suspect continued to drive along Hospital Center Boulevard and then turned right onto Courthouse Road. The vehicle had slowed and the deputy believed the suspect was looking for a location to stop. The suspect then drove by the commuter lot and a business and turned right onto Courthouse Road at the Stafford Fire Department. The suspect stopped at the red traffic signal at Red Oak Drive and Deputy Richardson approached the suspect on foot and told him to pull over.

Instead of pulling over, the suspect accelerated, spinning his tires, and turned left onto Red Oak Drive. The suspect had not anticipated First Sergeant D.F. Purcell, Jr. arriving to back up Deputy Richardson. As Deputy Richardson ran back to his patrol car, First Sergeant Purcell pursued the suspect along Red Oak Drive. After approximately a quarter mile, the suspect recognized the futility of trying to escape and pulled over.

The driver was identified as Wendall Anderson, 55, of Stafford. Anderson had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and emitted an odor of alcoholic beverage. A spilled beverage was located in the floorboard of the car. Field sobriety tests were initiated and Anderson was arrested for driving under the influence. A search warrant for blood was obtained and executed.

Anderson was charged with driving under the influence-third or subsequent offense within five years, driving on a revoked license-third or subsequent offense, driving on a revoked license while driving under the influence, operating a vehicle without an ignition interlock system, eluding, drinking while driving, and speeding. He was held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
