As a Stafford deputy was completing a traffic stop on Garrisonville Road early this morning, he observed a vehicle fail to move over a lane and the driver was arrested for DUI.

Deputy K. Voellmar had just returned to his marked Sheriff’s car during a traffic stop at Garrisonville Road near Shelton Shop Road. He was stationary on the roadside with his emergency lights activated at 1:00 a.m. this morning. A red Dodge Challenger approached the traffic stop heading westbound on Garrisonville Road and failed to move completely over a lane.

Deputy Voellmar followed the vehicle and observed it was unable to maintain the lane of travel, crossing over the dotted line and fog line of the roadway. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver was identified as Usmaan Chaudhry, 22, of Stafford. Chaudhry had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and an odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath. Field sobriety tests were administered and he was arrested for DUI.

Chaudhry was charged with DUI, refusal, obstruction and the traffic lane violation. He was held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $1,500 unsecure bond.

Drivers are reminded Virginia law requires you to move over a lane on four lane highways, if it is safe to do so, for stationary emergency vehicles.
