Stafford, VA. A suspect was arrested on Friday night by the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office after drinking a small box of wine at Target and driving away from the store.

On March 1, 2019, at approximately 4:57 p.m., Sgt. Rakoczy conducted a traffic stop after observing a driver flick burning cigarette material out of the window while traveling southbound on Route 17.

When Sgt. Rakoczy approached the suspect vehicle, he immediately detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. The driver was identified as Diana Thorne, 30, of Stafford. Her speech was slurred and her eyes were bloodshot and glassy.

Sgt. Rakoczy observed an empty box of wine inside the vehicle as well as a full, unopened one. Thorne admitted to drinking the wine in the Target located at 25 South Gateway Drive.

Field sobriety tests were subsequently conducted and Thorne was taken into custody. After a search warrant for blood was obtained, Thorne was taken to a local hospital where she became very combative and belligerent. During that time, she kicked Sgt. Rakoczy and Deputy Buzzard.

The suspect was incarcerated at Rappahannock Regional Jail on charges of driving under the influence, assault and battery on a law enforcement officer, obstruction of justice, use of abusive language, and throwing an inflammatory object from a vehicle.
