Stafford, VA. A suspect was arrested on numerous charges early Thursday morning by deputies with the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office after he locked himself in his vehicle during a traffic stop to avoid arrest.

On January 10, 2019, at approximately 12:59 a.m., Deputy Houde was traveling eastbound on Garrisonville Road when he observed a vehicle fail to stop at a red light. The vehicle was also traveling above the posted speed limit. The deputy then initiated a traffic stop in the area of 428 Garrisonville Road.

The driver was identified as Terrence Tiller, 33, of Stafford. The deputy immediately observed that Tiller’s eyes were red and glassy. When the deputy asked for his license, Tiller told him he left it at home. The deputy went back to his vehicle and learned the suspect’s license had been revoked for a DUI-related offense.

When the deputy returned to the suspect vehicle, the driver locked the doors and refused to exit the vehicle. Backup units arrived and the deputy informed them he was arresting the suspect for driving revoked. However, the suspect continued to refuse to comply with the deputy’s commands.

Deputies then informed the suspect they would break the window if he did not exit the vehicle. After the suspect failed to comply, they broke the window and removed the suspect from the vehicle. Deputy Houde then detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the suspect. A search of the vehicle yielded a machete under the passenger seat and the vehicle’s expired license plates. The suspect later admitted the tags currently on his vehicle belonged to his roommate.

The suspect was taken into custody and incarcerated at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $1500.00 secured bond. He is charged with driving under the influence, driving under the influence while DUI-revoked, obstruction of justice, carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, fictitious registration, expired inspection, speeding, and failure to obey a traffic light.
