Motorists should stay alert for slow-moving equipment
applying anti-icing solution

FREDERICKSBURG – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will have a mobile operation underway today to pre-treat Interstate 95 and main roads in the Fredericksburg area, Middle Peninsula, and Northern Neck.

Trucks will apply a salt brine anti-icing solution to Interstate 95 and primary roads, including Route 1, Route 2, Route 3, Route 17, Route 30, Route 207, Route 208, Route 218, Route 301, and Route 360. Secondary roads that carry heavy traffic will also be pre-treated.

Anti-icing prevents ice from bonding to the pavement during inclement weather, which reduces the risk of hazardous travel conditions.

Trucks pre-treating the interstate travel together at approximately 35 mph. Slower travel speeds are required to spray the salt brine onto the interstate with precision, and to ensure an adequate amount is absorbed in the pavement.

One truck travels in each of I-95’s three general purpose lanes, forming a straight line across the interstate. These trucks are followed by equipment fitted with crash protection devices. Law enforcement officials accompany the operation to alert motorists to slow-moving vehicles and assist with rolling, temporary ramp closures.

Motorists are advised to reduce their speed if they encounter crews applying chemicals to the road, and to avoid passing the trucks if possible.
