VDOT will stabilize embankment along road’s southern side

FREDERICKSBURG – A section of River Road in Stafford County will be closed to through traffic on weekdays over two weeks in October for a road maintenance project.

River Road will be closed between the entrance to Pratt Park and Gordon Street between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. the week of Monday, Oct. 6 through Friday, Oct. 10, and again the week of Monday, Oct.13-Friday, Oct. 17.

The River Road entrance to Pratt Park will remain open to traffic approaching from Route 3 Business.

A road closure is needed so the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) can stabilize an embankment and halt erosion along the south side of River Road.

Specialized equipment, a soil nail launcher, will be used to work on the steep terrain. The soil nail launcher creates a retaining wall by drilling holes beneath the roadway, and inserting steel rods into the ground. The rods are covered with a mesh wire net and anchored with bolts. The entire surface is then covered with shotcrete, a concrete material.

Motorists can call 511, visit www.511Virginia.org or use VDOT’s 511Virginia free mobile app to find real-time traffic and work zone information in any area of the state.
