Northbound motorists could experience brief delays in Stafford County

FREDERICKSBURG – Northbound Route 17 traffic in Stafford County will be shifted into temporary travel lanes tonight between just south of Interstate 95 and International Parkway, starting after 9 p.m.

Motorists should expect minor travel delays. Traffic cones, barrels and signs will guide drivers into the temporary travel lanes, which will be slightly left of the existing lanes.

Temporary northbound travel lanes have been built along the median of Route 17. Shifting traffic into these lanes provides space for VDOT and its contractor, Henderson Construction Co., to work on widening Route 17 along the right side of the road.

Work will conclude by 5:30 a.m. Thursday morning. As needed, the traffic shift may continue again on Thursday evening between 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.

A $48.9 million project is underway to widen Route 17 from four to six lanes between McLane Drive and Stafford Lakes Parkway, a distance of nearly 2 miles. The project began in June 2013, and will be completed by December 1, 2016.

Real-time listings of travel times, work zones, and traffic incidents in Virginia are available on VDOT’s 24-hour traffic information website, www.511Virginia.org. Motorists can also access 511Virginia by calling 511 from any telephone in Virginia, or downloading VDOT’s 511Virginia free mobile app.
