| STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. – On May 12, 2026, an alert citizen located a newborn infant in a small park near the area of Embrey Mill Road and Coriander Lane overlooking Embrey Mill Road. The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office is grateful to report that the infant’s mother has been located, and we thankfully confirm that both she and the infant are safe and healthy. In every case we investigate, the Sheriff’s Office carefully evaluates all information and evidence to determine whether charges are appropriate. This case was handled no different. In close partnership with the Office of the Commonwealth Attorney, we have determined that no charges will be filed related to this incident at this time. Throughout this investigation, our top priority remained the well-being of both the mother and the infant. Detectives worked around the clock and followed every lead to provide assistance to the mother and the infant. To protect the privacy of the mother and the infant, we will not be releasing their identities or any additional information at this time. We are incredibly thankful for the support and generosity shown by the Stafford County community. We received numerous offers of donations for the infant, and our social media posts were shared more than 700 times. The compassion demonstrated by this community reflects the very best of Stafford County, and we are proud to serve the people who call it home. Finally, this case highlights the importance of public awareness regarding Safe Haven laws and locations that are designed to protect newborns. In Stafford County, any fire station or hospital is a designated Safe Haven location where a parent may legally surrender an unharmed infant within 30 days of birth, with no questions asked and without fear of criminal repercussions.
