A 26-year-old Stafford man took deputies on the scenic route to his residence after a hard night out drinking. On July 9th at approximately 12:16 a.m. Deputy S.A. Fulford was traveling Southbound on Deacon Road. While doing so a Northbound vehicle passed him traveling 77 MPH in a 45 MPH zone. Deputy Fulford would make a U-turn and attempt to conduct a traffic stop. Instead, the Dodge Dart decided to dodge him and quickly dart off, initiating a pursuit. Great Scott, the Dart would travel at speeds of 88 MPH as it took a sharp left onto Ficklen Road and then a right onto Julian Drive. This speed would be too much for the driver, for when he attempted to turn into a driveway, later discovered to be his own, he overshot it and hit a ditch. The ditch didn’t delay the Dodge and instead the vehicle began driving in the grass between residences. With Deputy Fulford right on his tail, the driver drove through his backyard only to come to a stop. Realizing the home base philosophy doesn’t work in Stafford County, the driver surrendered. The driver was identified as Kenneth Jones. Jones had signs of intoxication and admitted to consuming alcohol prior to his failed fleeing endeavor. Within the vehicle was a nearly completely consumed beer. Jones was charged with felony eluding, driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content between .15 and .2, drinking while driving, reckless driving, and vandalism to his neighbors’ yard. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. |
