An adult and a juvenile were detained late last night after numerous calls regarding residents hearing gunfire.

On June 19th at approximately 10:07 p.m. deputies responded to the 400 block of Warrenton Road for a serious situation. A number of callers heard gunshots near the area of Short Street and kids yelling. Fearing the worst, deputies were quick to flood the area and ensure there were no victims involved. Callers also reported seeing a black male wearing a white tank top holding a firearm as he ran into a room at the Motel 6, located at 401 Warrenton Road.

Due to this information, deputies established a perimeter around the business and maintained a visual of the room in question. Moments later, a male perfectly matching the suspect description exited the room. The suspect, a 17-year-old, was detained and announcements were made for the other guests within the room to exit. In total, four individuals were detained, three were juveniles, one was a 28-year-old male. The 28-year-old was found to be in possession of a firearm and a drum magazine.

It was discovered the four were celebrating when they went behind the Olde Forge Shopping Center. There, the 28-year-old would take out his firearm and allow the 17-year-old to hold it. the 17-year-old, who was “wanting to practice” fired several shots before the group fled back to their hotel room. Spent cartridges were recovered.

The 28-year-old was charged with three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, reckless disregard of a child, and reckless handling of a firearm. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. The 17-year-old received criminal complaints for brandishing a firearm and reckless handling of a firearm. Juvenile Intake was contacted and elected to detain the juvenile. He was held at the Juvenile Detention Center. The other two juveniles were released to a responsible adult without charges.
