On April 29th at approximately 2:22 a.m. Deputy N.J. Amato and Deputy T.G. Croson responded to the Jessica Cheney Bridge for an attempted suicide report. A subject was sitting on the ledge of the bridge about to jump down onto I-95 traffic. Deputies arrived and began conversing with the subject. Using de-escalation techniques, the pair attempted to build a rapport with the subject. Despite their efforts, the subject jumped down. Luckily, other units had halted traffic, allowing Deputy Amato and Croson to quickly run down the embankment and begin rendering first aid. The subject sustained injuries, but was thankfully still alive. Fire and Rescue staff arrived and transported the subject to a nearby hospital. None of the subject’s injuries appeared to be life threatening. We implore anyone having a mental health crisis to reach out for help. There are people and resources available 24/7 to assist.
