A Stafford teen faces numerous serious charges after a pursuit through South Stafford late last night.

On April 1st at 11:01 p.m. Sergeant D.R. Colona was traveling northbound on University Boulevard when he observed a grey Honda Civic approaching from behind him at a high rate of speed. The Honda driver got to approximately 30 feet from the rear of the Sergeant’s marked patrol car and slammed on his brakes, causing the Honda to go sideways in the roadway.

The Honda driver proceeded to accelerate, breaking traction, and made a U-turn proceeding southbound on University Boulevard. Sgt. Colona also conducted a U-turn to prepare for a traffic stop and the Honda driver turned off his headlights.

Sgt. Colona activated his emergency equipment, but the Honda driver refused to stop and initiated a pursuit. The suspect continued to Stafford Lakes Parkway, through a red traffic signal across Warrenton Road and into the parking lot of Aldi. The chase went through the parking lot of the 7-Eleven, back through the red traffic signal across Warrenton Road to Stafford Lakes Parkway.

The suspect continued at speeds over 80 mph and ran the stop sign at University Boulevard and Village Parkway, nearly causing an accident with another motorist. A tire went down on the Honda, and the suspect slowed to between 40 and 60 mph. As the Honda tire disintegrated, pieces of rubber were flung at the pursuing deputies. The suspect continued onto Royal Crescent Way and then Charter Gate, where he crashed in the front yard of a home.

Believing the pursuit was over, deputies tried to call the driver out of the damaged Honda. Instead, he requested deputies turn off their emergency equipment and he would surrender after using his vape. The driver did not surrender, instead putting the car back in gear and initiating another pursuit to the cul-de-sac of Laurel Pine Court.

Again, it was believed the pursuit was over, but the suspect struck a patrol car and went through two yards in his escape attempt. Deputy M.A. Holub attempted to end the pursuit with intentional vehicle contact, but the suspect continued and took out a cable box in a front yard. Finally, the suspect returned to Royal Crescent Way and crashed in a front yard.

The suspect was this time completely boxed in, but reminded uncooperative. Several deputies were required to take him into custody.

The suspect was identified as Caleb Cooney, 18. He was ultimately charged with two counts of felony eluding, two counts of obstruction, DUI second offense in five years, driving suspended, and several traffic infractions. He was held without bond. This is an ongoing investigation.
