A Woodbridge man faces several serious charges after driving intoxicated and struggling with deputies during his arrest this weekend.

On October 1st at 7:06 p.m. Sergeant G.A. Haney observed a Lincoln truck failing to maintain the lane of travel on southbound U.S. 1 near Merryview Drive. The driver of the Lincoln swerved in his lane and ran off the paved surface of the roadway several times onto the shoulder.

Sgt. Haney activated his emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop as the vehicle approached Little Forest Church Road. The suspect continued along U.S. 1 and briefly stopped at Kings Crest Drive. The suspect proceeded to make a slow turn into the development, and waved his arm out of the window. Instead of stopping, the suspect drove past the senior living center, two apartment complex parking lots and numerous open parking spaces. Sgt. Haney used his public address system to tell the suspect to stop and activated the siren, but the suspect continued onto Wind Ridge Drive. The suspect finally pulled into a parking spot in the 900 block of Wind Ridge Drive.

The driver refused to follow basic commands to show his hands and reached into the center console. Sgt. Haney, now assisted by Deputy J.K. Griffith, attempted to take the suspect into custody and a struggle ensued. The suspect reached toward his midsection and Sgt. Haney observed the grip of a handgun tucked in the suspect’s waistband. Deputy Griffith was able to remove the suspect’s handgun as the struggle continued. Deputy R.T. Philippsen and Deputy J.D. Hurt arrived to assist as well, and the suspect was handcuffed.

The suspect was identified as Robert Williams, 41. Williams had glassy, bloodshot eyes and an odor of alcoholic beverage. He was charged with DUI, obstruction of justice, eluding, refusal, carrying a concealed weapon and the traffic lane violation. Williams was held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail. The Smith and Wesson handgun was seized as evidence.
