An Annandale male was jailed yesterday due to damaging a local hotel and fighting with multiple deputies.

On July 28th, 2022 deputies responded to a call of a disturbance at the Clarion Inn located at 565 Warrenton Road. Hotel staff advised the suspect, Lawrence Gaffney, 33, was using a fire extinguisher to damage the property. Deputies believed Gaffney to be under the influence due to his difficulty to communicate and unsteadiness on his feet.

When deputies tried to deescalate the situation and detain Gaffney, he would make erratic movements and not comply. As Gaffney made an attempt to get away, he slipped on water on the floor and fell to the ground. Two deputies attempted to put Gaffney in handcuffs; however, he continued to resist. Deputy M.E. Gordon gave warnings to Gaffney that if he did not comply he would be tazed. Gaffney was still not complying and was tazed.

The tazer was effective and Gaffney was put in handcuffs. In response, Gaffney kicked one of the deputies in the head. Gaffney continued to resist and called deputies “jellyfish” as he received medical attention from medics.

Gaffney was charged with destruction of property, public intoxication, obstruction of justice and assault and battery on law enforcement. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. The deputy was not injured during the incident.

Great work and a job well done to Captain B.G. Worcester, First Sergeant J.J. Kreider, Deputy V.L. Powell, F.A. Martinez, Deputy M.E. Gordon, and Deputy K.L. Steffenhagen for deescalating this violent situation.
