DUI Arrest

A suspect was arrested for DUI Friday night after a single vehicle accident in North Stafford.

On March 25th at 10:24 p.m. Deputy E.E. West responded to a single vehicle accident in the 200 block of Greenspring Drive. The investigation revealed a Ford Explorer had left the roadway, taken out a mailbox, went down an embankment and crashed into a tree. The driver proceeded to drive back up the embankment, across Greenspring Drive and into a stand of trees. Witnesses reported the driver abandoned the Explorer in the trees and fled on foot.

The driver was located at his nearby residence and identified as Zachary Schmitz, 21. Schmitz had slurred speech, glassy eyes and a strong odor of alcoholic beverage. Field sobriety tests were administered and he was arrested.

Schmitz was charged with DUI elevated blood alcohol content, hit and run, destruction of property and reckless driving. He was held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail on an unsecured bond until sober.
