A man was arrested for disorderly conduct yesterday after walking into traffic and attempting to climb atop a marked Sheriff’s cruiser.

On March 16th at 2:07 p.m. Deputy D.R. Colona and Deputy T.M. Givler responded to U.S. 1 near Perchwood Drive for a subject walking into traffic with an American flag and causing a disturbance. This was the second time deputies had been called for this behavior yesterday, with the first incident resulting in a warning.

Deputies identified the subject as William Sommer II, 36, of Wilmington, North Carolina. As deputies again explained to Sommer that he could not walk out into the road, Sommer attempted to enter a locked Sheriff’s cruiser.

When Sommer discovered the cruiser was locked, he said, “Fine, I’ll just climb on the roof.” Sommer grabbed the top of the roof and put a foot on the bumper as if he was participating in a game of “King of the Mountain.” His attempt to scale the vehicle was thwarted, and he was quickly taken into custody.

Sommer was charged with disorderly conduct and held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $1,000 bond. Deputies have attempted to assist Sommer with community resources, but he continues to refuse help.
