Deputies apprehended a DUI driver after he wrecked his vehicle during a pursuit.

On January 21 at 7:21 p.m., Deputy D.A. Earp observed a vehicle speeding. He initiated a traffic stop in the area of Route 17 and Solomon Drive. The vehicle did not stop and it began to accelerate onto Lendall Lane.

While on Lendall Lane, the suspect drove at a high-rate of speed and almost lost control of the vehicle multiple times. The suspect ran the stop sign at Ingleside Drive and attempted to make a right turn. Instead, he lost control of the vehicle and drove straight through the intersection where he collided with a telephone pole before coming to a rest in a ditch. As the suspect attempted to reverse out of the ditch, Deputy Earp made intentional vehicle contact with the suspect’s vehicle. However, the suspect continued his attempts to flee and drove forward crashing into a tree. He made one last attempt to escape by trying to drive over several large rocks, but the vehicle was finally rendered inoperable, ending the pursuit.

Deputy Earp took the suspect, Eugene Evans, 58, of Fredericksburg, into custody without further incident. Evans had glassy eyes and smelled of alcoholic beverages. Multiple open containers of alcoholic beverages were found inside the vehicle. Evans was charged with driving under the influence-2nd offense within 5 years, driving under the influence on a revoked license, driving on a revoked license, eluding, and drinking while operating a motor vehicle. He was held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
