Reminder to Secure Your Vehicles

March 31, 2020

The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office has seen a recent uptick in reports regarding larcenies from vehicles. During this extended period of time when many people are not leaving their homes, it is important that your vehicles are secure and that you have no valuables stored in the vehicle.

Take the time to make sure that your vehicle is locked. If not, your vehicle and any items inside become temptation to individuals who prey on stealing from unsecured vehicles. Larcenies from vehicles are often crimes of opportunity. In most cases thieves will simply go car to car in parking lots or neighborhoods checking door handles for unlocked vehicles, often hitting multiple neighborhoods in one night.

When possible, park in a well-lit, well-observed and well-traveled parking area, use your garage, or consider installing a motion sensor light where you park. Consider installing a car alarm or security device and place anti-theft stickers on your vehicle and never store a spare key in or on your car.

Remind your friends, family and neighbors to make sure their vehicles are locked, and report any suspicious activity to the Sheriff’s Office at (540) 658-4400. If you see something, say something!
