Stafford, VA. A suspect was taken into custody on Friday after assaulting a female subject at a residence and stealing a motor vehicle from the parking lot of a Wawa in the northern end of Stafford County.

On September 6, 2019, at approximately 9:13 a.m., Deputy Runnerstrom responded to the Wawa located at 105 Garrisonville Road regarding a larceny. Upon arrival, Deputy Runnerstrom made contact with the victim who advised that he left his vehicle parked at the gas pumps while he went inside the store. When he returned, the vehicle was missing.

Surveillance camera footage showed a male subject enter the vehicle and drive away. The subject matched the description of a suspect identified as Robert Allen Hughes Jr., 27, of Manassas, VA who was behind an assault that occurred earlier that morning.

At approximately 2:04 a.m., Deputy Houde had responded to a residence on Sydney Lane regarding an assault. Upon arrival, he made contact with a female subject who explained that the suspect had just left the residence. She told the deputy that she and the suspect had been watching a movie. After she briefly left the room and returned, he grabbed her by the throat and began choking her. She eventually broke free of his grasp and he left.

A perimeter was established, and Sergeant Burgess and Deputy Reed located the suspect hiding behind a vehicle. They attempted to detain him, but he resisted and took off running. Units lost sight of the suspect after he jumped a fence.

Later that day, the suspect was taken into custody by the Prince William County Police Department. The stolen vehicle was also located in Prince William County. Hughes was incarcerated at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond on numerous charges including grand larceny, abduction, strangulation, assault and battery, obstruction, and resisting arrest.
