Stafford VA. The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Unit is investigating a single vehicle accident that occurred on Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Cambridge Street and Layhill Road.

On August 22, 2019, at approximately 3:55 p.m., deputies responded to the intersection after several witnesses reported observing a tractor trailer drive off the roadway. Witnesses advised that they were sitting at the red light on southbound Cambridge Street when a tractor trailer approached the location and exited the roadway to the right into the ditch line.

The crash caused downed power lines in the area as well as a major fuel spill. Cambridge Street was closed at that intersection for several hours to allow tow trucks to remove the vehicle from the ditch and first responders to investigate the accident. In addition, emergency crews spent several hours cleaning up the fuel spill.

The driver was transported to a local hospital and has been released. He has been identified as Lance Swanson, 41, of Fredericksburg. Charges for reckless driving are pending.
