Stafford, VA. A suspect was arrested on Sunday night by deputies with the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office for driving under the influence after her vehicle was found stopped in the middle of a roadway.

On June 29, 2019, at approximately 10:13 p.m., Deputy McAlister responded to a drunk driver complaint on Stony Hill Road. A witness had observed a vehicle stopped in the middle of the roadway. When he approached the vehicle, he saw the driver asleep and the passenger was hunched over and had vomited on herself.

The witness woke them up and told them not to go anywhere because they appeared intoxicated. However, the driver and passenger then exited the vehicle and the passenger got into the driver’s seat and drove away. The witness then called the Sheriff’s Office and followed the vehicle to the driveway of a residence on Empress Alexandra Place.

Upon arrival, Deputy McAlister made contact with the witness who advised that he had seen the subjects enter the residence. While speaking with the witness, he saw a female subject walk towards them. The deputy detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from her person. She also had bloodshot, glassy eyes and was unsteady on her feet.

The suspect was identified as Alison Payne, 31, of Ruther Glen. Field sobriety tests were conducted and a preliminary breath test was administered. She admitted to drinking that evening.

Payne was taken into custody and incarcerated at Rappahannock Regional Jail until sober for driving under the influence and public intoxication.
