Stafford, VA. A suspect was arrested on Sunday afternoon after crashing into a parked vehicle, walking away from the scene, and then providing false identification to a deputy with the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.

On April 28, 2019, at approximately 1:32 p.m., Deputy Assur responded to reports of an accident after a witness observed a suspected drunk driver strike a parked vehicle on Bells Ridge Drive. The witness then observed the female driver walking away from the scene.

Upon arrival, the deputy located the driver a short distance away from the crashed vehicle. She was crying profusely. Initially, the suspect provided a false name to the deputy; however, a passenger of the vehicle correctly identified the suspect as Erica Costley, 20, of Culpeper.

Deputy Assur observed that the suspect’s eyes were bloodshot and glassy, her speech was slurred, and she was unsteady on her feet. She was also extremely lethargic. Field sobriety tests were subsequently conducted and a search warrant for blood was later executed.

Costley was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence, providing false identification to law enforcement, identity theft, driving suspended, no liability insurance, failure to maintain lane control, and no front license plate. She was also served outstanding warrants out of Culpeper for drug-related charges.

She was incarcerated at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
