January 26, 2016

Today, Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at 10:24 am the Stafford County Emergency Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call reporting a man had fallen through the ice on Aquia Creek near the 800 block of Hope Road in Stafford County. A 64-year-old man was reported to have fallen through the ice approximately 50 yards from the shore, in attempt to save his dog, which had also fallen through the ice. The victim’s son had called 9-1-1 and reported that his father was in distress and could not hold on for long and was having difficulty breathing. The victim’s son then pushed a canoe out onto the ice in attempt to save his father. Detective Tim Covington was in the area and quickly responded to the scene. Detective Covington ran out 50 yards onto the ice and found the victim in the water, clinging to the canoe. Detective Covington was able to pull the man out of the water and assist him to the shore. The victim’s son was able to get the families yellow lab out of the water. Detective Covington then helped the victim into the garage of his residence and rendered aid, as the victim was going into shock. Stafford Fire & Rescue arrived on scene a short time later and took over care. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown. The victim’s son and dog escaped uninjured.
