Traffic will be shifted right into temporary lanes for widening project in Stafford County

FREDERICKSBURG – Northbound Route 17 traffic in Stafford County will be shifted into temporary travel lanes in stages between Sanford Drive and International Parkway next week.

Two northbound lanes will remain open throughout the work, which will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each weekday, beginning on Tuesday, March 18.

The traffic shift will begin Tuesday between Sanford Drive and McLane Drive, and will advance northbound during the week until reaching International Parkway.

Traffic cones, barrels and signs will guide drivers into the temporary travel lanes, which will be slightly right of the existing travel lanes.

The traffic shift is occurring so paving work can take place in the median of Route 17. Once paving work is complete, northbound Route 17 traffic will be shifted slightly left into the freshly paved lanes, so workers can begin work on the right side of the road.

A $48.9 million project to widen Route 17 from four to six lanes between McLane Drive and Stafford Lakes Parkway is underway. Construction began in June 2013, and will be completed by December 2016.
