VDOT CREWS PREPARE FOR SNOW
Anti-icing operation is underway today on I-95, primary and key secondary routes throughout the Fredericksburg District

FREDERICKSBURG – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews have a mobile operation underway to pre-treat Interstate 95, primary roads and key secondary routes in the Fredericksburg District with a salt brine anti-icing solution.

Snow accumulation is expected to fall throughout the 14-county district starting Tuesday morning. Wind gusts of up to 45 mph are also possible.

VDOT crews are preparing equipment and materials today, and will mobilize starting at 4 a.m. Tuesday morning to plow snow and treat roads.

Roads are expected to remain dry prior to the onset of snow, allowing VDOT to pre-treat major travel routes. Anti-icing prevents ice from bonding to the pavement during inclement weather, which reduces the risk of hazardous travel conditions.

Motorists may encounter brief delays on I-95 today if they encounter a mobile anti-icing operation.

Trucks pre-treating the interstate travel together at approximately 35 mph. One truck travels in each of I-95’s three general purpose lanes, forming a straight line across the interstate. The trucks are followed by a law enforcement vehicle, which absorbs much of the excess salt emitted by the application process. Slower travel speeds are required to spray the salt brine onto the interstate with precision, and to ensure an adequate amount is absorbed in the pavement.
